Marilyn in Manhattan is a made-for-television documentary of
Marilyn Monroe’s time living and working in New York and Connecticut, while she
studied acting at the Actor’s Studio with Lee Strasberg. The film concentrates
on Monroe’s relationships with photographer Milton Greene (with whom she
founded her own film production company), the Strasbergs, and Arthur Miller.
The best thing about the film is seeing the original footage
and stills of the actress. For me she becomes a chameleon. She can look totally
different depending on her mood.
Susan Strasberg, who considered herself a
sister to the actress tells of walking down the street in New York being
totally unnoticed. “Want to see me become her?” Marilyn asks. Then, says
Strasberg, she turn on whatever it was that made her into Marilyn Monroe and
she was immediately recognized. They had to take a cab to escape the fans. It’s
a moment that was used in My Week with Marilyn (2011).
As a brief overview of the New York years of Marilyn, the
film was fascinating.
